due to と owing to について

「due to」、「owing to」、「because of」、「as a result of」は全部同義であり、 前置詞 として機能しますが、使用に関して多少の違いがあります。「due to」は以下のように叙述形容詞として働く前置詞句を導入することができます。
1. This effect is due to the increase in temperature.
「owing to」と「as a result of」には同様の用法はありません。「because of」は、このように使用できないとは言えませんが、そうした用法が不自然な場合が多いです。

3. Owing to recent developments in battery technology, electric cars are becoming a viable alternative to gas-powered cars.

これらの例文で「because of」、「owing to」、「due to」、「as a result of」は文法的に同様に用いられていますが、微妙な意味上の違いによって、互いに置き換えると文意が不自然になるケースがあります。また、「due to」をこのように使用してはいけないという意見もあります。しかし、これは根拠の薄い規則ですので、ここで例示されるような「due to」の使用を避ける必要はありません。
