間違いやすい用語や表現 －the one　

代名詞「one」は日本人学者の論文で過度に使用されると思われます。熟語「the one」における誤用は特によく見受けられます。
「the one」が表現として誤っているとは言えませんが、学術論では一般に（「one」が代名詞となっている）「the one」よりは「that」の方が適切です。私が今まで読んできた学術論文では、ほぼ例外なく「the one」（「the ones」）はそのまま「that」（「those」）に置き換えるべきものでした。
以下は典型的です。
[誤] (1) This method is similar to the one studied in Ref. [2].
[正] (1’) This method is similar to that studied in Ref. [2].
[誤] (2) These solutions are then compared with the ones derived above.
[正] (2’) These solutions are then compared with those derived above.

[誤] (3) The proof of Theorem 3 is similar to the one that we presented in Section 2 for the case of a strictly convex function.
[正] (3’) The proof of Theorem 3 is similar to that which we presented in Section 2 for the case of a strictly convex function.
「the one」の誤用に関する実用的な対策への提案は以下になります。
論文が書き終わったら、最終チェックとして「the one(s)」を検索し、「one(s)」が代名詞となっていることを確認したら、「the one(s)」を「that」（「those」）に置き換える、という単純な作業で十分です。（なお、(3)が例示するように、「that」が「the one(s)」の直後にくる場合には、それを「which」にすべきです。）
