間違いやすい用語や表現 ー動詞「set」の誤用

「to be」との誤った併用

日本人学者が書いた論文において動詞「set」が誤用されていることを度々目にします。ここでは「set」の一つの典型的な誤用を考察します。

以下を見てみましょう。

[誤] (1) Here, x is set to be positive.
[誤] (2) In the first case,Гis set to be 1.
[誤] (3) We set the inter-particle force to be strictly repulsive.
[誤] (4) We simplified the above derivation by setting the inverse of the correlation time to be equal to the Larmor frequency.

上の例文における「set … to be」という表現の用法は誤っています。これは文法上の問題ではなく、むしろ意味上の問題です。その問題は、「set」が（例えば変数と値との）対応関係を表すのに対し、「to be」は最も自然な用法では状態や性質を表すのに使われる、ということにあります。

以下に誤用例の修正文を示します。

[正] (1) Here, x is chosen/assumed to be positive.
[正] (2) In the first case,Гis set to 1.
[正] (3) We choose/define the inter-particle force to be strictly repulsive.
[正] (4) We simplified the above derivation by setting the inverse of the correlation time equal to the Larmor frequency.

ここで見られるように、「set … to be」の修正方法は、表される記述が定性的なものかあるいは定量的なものかということによります。前者の場合には「set」を定性的な意味を適切に示せる動詞に置き換え、後者の場合には「to be」を「to」に置き換えるか削除するべきです。
