Refinement, correction, editing or formatting the manuscript to improve clarity of language
Policy Summary
For abstracts submitted for presentation at the AACR Annual Meeting 2026, authors may use generative AI to revise or translate author-written text to improve clarity. If AI is used to produce new text or other material for an abstract, this use must be disclosed in a sentence at the end of the abstract body, and any AI use connected to conducting the underlying study must be described in the Methods section. All abstract authors must review the completed abstract to confirm the accuracy and integrity of all statements prior to submission.
Evidence
- Generative artificial intelligence (AI), as with traditional automated and manual editing services, has the potential to improve the clarity of submitted manuscripts when used to help revise or translate text written by the author. However, it is always the author's responsibility to ensure that any editing process does not alter the intended meaning of the text and that references are relevant to the study and are cited as required. Use of any editing services or technologies should be specifically declared in the acknowledgments section of submitted manuscripts.
AI Status
Writing or drafting manuscript content
Policy Summary
AACR permits the use of AI to produce new text for manuscripts, provided this use is described in detail in an accompanying cover letter and in an appropriate section of the manuscript itself. For example, AI-based generation of text must be described in the Acknowledgments. Authors are responsible for ensuring the accuracy and integrity of all content, including AI-generated text.
Evidence
- Unlike in the limited case above of authors revising or translating existing manuscript text generated by the human authors credited in the manuscript author list, any use of AI to produce new text, images, or other material for their manuscript must be described in detail in an accompanying cover letter and in an appropriate section of the manuscript itself. For example, AI-based generation of text or illustrations must be described in the Acknowledgments. Any use of AI in connection with the conduct of the study underlying the manuscript must be described in detail in the methods section of the manuscript.
AI Status
Translation of manuscript text for the purpose of publishing
Policy Summary
For AACR Annual Meeting 2026 abstracts, authors may use AI to help translate text they wrote in order to improve clarity. If AI is used to produce new text or other material for an abstract, this use must be disclosed in a sentence at the end of the abstract body. All abstract authors are fully responsible for reviewing the completed abstract to verify the accuracy and integrity of all statements prior to submission.
AI Status
Refining or formatting of data reported in the manuscript
Policy Summary
AACR requires that any use of AI in connection with the conduct of the study underlying the manuscript, including data analysis and formatting, be described in detail in the methods section. Authors are responsible for the integrity of the data, the accuracy of the data analysis and reporting, and the responsible oversight and use of generative AI.
At least one named author must indicate that they '… had full access to all the data in the study and takes responsibility for the integrity of the data, the accuracy of the data analysis and reporting, and [if relevant] the responsible oversight and use of generative AI.'
AI Status
Generation, refinement, correction, editing or formatting of images, diagrams or other figures for illustrative purposes only
Policy Summary
AACR permits the use of AI to produce images or other material for manuscripts, provided this use is described in detail in an accompanying cover letter and in an appropriate section of the manuscript itself. AI-based generation of illustrations must be described in the Acknowledgments section.
AI Status
Generation, refinement, correction, editing or formatting of visualisations of research data or results
Policy Summary
AACR permits the use of AI to produce data visualisations or other material for manuscripts, provided this use is described in detail in an accompanying cover letter and in an appropriate section of the manuscript. Any use of AI in connection with the conduct of the study must be described in the Methods section.
AI Status
Refinement or formatting of code reported in the submitted manuscript
Policy Summary
AACR requires that any use of AI in connection with the conduct of the study underlying the manuscript, including use for code generation or refinement, be described in detail in the methods section. Authors are responsible for the integrity of all outputs including code, and code and data used in analyses must be made available for reproducibility.
If custom software or code was central to the described work, the code and actual or representative data must be supplied in a form that is suitable for reviewers and readers to fully assess and reuse. An appropriate Code Availability Statement must be added at the end of the Materials and Methods (or Methods) section in the main text of the manuscript prior to acceptance.
AI Status
Assisting with gathering references
Policy Summary
Authors are fully responsible for the accuracy of any content produced with the assistance of AI tools. This responsibility includes ensuring that any citations or references supplied by an AI tool are accurate. The policy does not specify human review requirements for this classification.
Evidence
- Authors are fully responsible for the accuracy of any information provided by the tool, including the accuracy of citations.
AI Status
Presentation of any kind of content generated by AI tools as though it were original research data/results from non-machine sources
Policy Summary
AACR requires authors to describe in detail any use of AI to produce new text, images, or other material in an accompanying cover letter and in the manuscript itself. At least one named author must take responsibility for the integrity of the data, accuracy of data analysis, and the responsible oversight and use of generative AI. Presenting AI-generated content as original research without disclosure would directly violate these accountability and transparency requirements.
At least one named author must indicate that they '… had full access to all the data in the study and takes responsibility for the integrity of the data, the accuracy of the data analysis and reporting, and [if relevant] the responsible oversight and use of generative AI.'
